New Cadet
Instructions to Connect to the NMMI Network
updated Spring 2006
| 1.
Pick up your uusername and password at Information Services. Then complete the CAUP Discussion and CAUP Acceptance forms to IS.
|
-
Random passwords have been generated this year for the entire corps. To get connected to the network, you must come to Information Services (IS) on the 2nd floor of the Toles Resource Center (library). At this time you will use one of the computers in the library to complete the Computer Authorized Use Policy (CAUP) Discussion and Acceptance; printing out two forms that you are to date, sign and return to IS. The port in your room will be unlocked at that time.
- Now
you need to feed the other end of the cord to the wallplate under your
desk. The wallplate has an ORANGE port that is for ethernet use.
- Plug
the patch cable into the ORANGE port on your wallplate.
|
| 2.
After accepting the CAUP, use your CAT5 patch cable to physically connect your computer to our
network.
|
-
Take
your patch cable (this looks like a fat phone cord) and plug one end
(they should be identical, so use either end) into your computer's
10Base-T connection. This requires NO tools, and should be very easy
to do, if it's not then try it again with your other hand. It will fit
perfectly and will probably click in place.

Try to browse the internet
|
Open
Internet Explorer from the Start | Programs, or desktop shortcuts. Try to go to http://netreg.nmmi.local. If this brings up a Registration page, skip to step 6. If you are prompted to setup a connection, see step 5.
|
| 4.
Choose LAN use
|
To
use our Local Area Network (LAN) you need to reassure Windows that it
can connect to the internet via said LAN. Using the Internet Explorer Wizard you can easily do this.
Click on "Start", then "Settings", then "Control Panel". Double click on the "Internet Options" icon in Control Panel.
In
the "Internet Properties" window that just opened, click on the
"Connections" tab at the top, then click on the "Setup"
button.
- Once
the "Internet Connection Wizard" starts, you will be asked
several questions about how you connect to the network. The first one needs to be the last choice "I want to set up
my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local
area network (LAN).", then click on the "Next" button at the
bottom.
- The
wizard now asks practically the same question. Here you should select the "I connect through a local area
network (LAN)."
- Then
Click on "Next".
- UN-Check
any of the boxes that are checked on the Proxy connection screen. Your system will not work if you try to use a proxy. Then click on "Next".
- Choose
"No" on the "Do you want to set up an Internet mail account
now", and hit "Next". You
will set this up after joining the domain and installing Outlook 2000.
- Click
Finish to complete the wizard.
