Web Course Tools (WebCT) is a course development package that enables an instructor to integrate the Internet into delivery of a course. It was developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The faculty member in charge of the project, Murray W. Goldberg, founded a company, WebCT Educational Technologies, to license, distribute and further develop the WebCT course authoring and management tool. The first full version of WebCT was released in late 1997. In May of 1999 WebCT was purchased by Universal Learning Technology, Inc. The company was known as WebCT http://www.webct.com and maintains Canadian operations in Vancouver, BC and corporate offices in Peabody, MA, USA. On February 28, 2006, a merger was completed of Web CT with Blackboard. Both Blackboard and WebCT product lines will remain intact and supported according to the announcement at that time.
