Windows Machine Name

At NMMI there is a standard method of assigning machine names to Windows computers.

Cadet Machines -- Following the creation of a separate cadet network in the summer of 2005, cadet machines no longer need to be named.

Institute Owned -- Each computer, owned by NMMI, has a unique inventory tag containing an "A"; followed by six (6) numbers, for example A123456. NMMI computers will have the inventory tag as the machine name. This assures a unique name for each machine and the names will not be readily identifiable by someone snooping around the network. Identifying a machine as Registrar is not a good idea on a campus network.

You may find the name of your machine by

  • Go to Start/Run and enter the command "CMD" into the "Open:" box.
  • Enter the command line "ipconfig/all"
  • You will find the machine name listed under "Host Name".
  • Exit

OR

  • Go the classic view and right click on MyComputer
  • Select Properties
  • The machine name is under "Registered To:"
