The LightSpeed Systems Total Traffic Control spam filter was made active in March of 2008. It actively filters all mail that comes from the outside. If it determines the email is spam, it is not allowed to be delivered to the user. However, what is spam to one person is email to another, so in order to allow users to receive emails that may be marked as spam, we provide a Spam Mail Summary to each user daily in order to add valid email to the user's whitelist. Basically the whitelist is a list of allowed senders. A blacklist is a list of senders who are not allowed to send email to the NMMI domain. The Spam Mail Summary allows users to identify mail that is valid, and thus mark if for safe passage in the future.
If an email looks valid, it can be forwarded by clicking the "Forward" link where it can be viewed by the user. If it is then determined that the email is valid, it can then be added to the whitelist by clicking the "Whitelist" link. It is wise to keep in mind that any email you may receive from an unsolicited sender is probably sent with malicious intent. It is always best to never open unsolicited email.
