What can you tell me about troubleshooting a network connection problem?
Moderator: compserv@nmmi.edu (inherited from parent)
1. Is the computer receiving power?
   a. Make sure it is plugged into the wall outlet.
   b. Make sure the power for the CPU is turned on.
   c. Make sure your monitor is turned on.

2. Is the patch cord plugged into the ORANGE jack underneath the desk?
   a. If it appears that it is plugged in, unplug it and reinsert it into both the orange jack and into the Network Interface Card.
   b. If this does not correct the problem then try a patch cord that has been verified to be good.
   c. If this does not correct the problem contact IS to verify your network connection.
   d. If your connection is found to be in working order then the problem is with the computer or NIC. You will need to contact a vendor of your choice to fix the problem.

3. Is there a link light on the Network Interface Card (NIC)?
   a. If no link light is present it could be the network connection to the wall jack.
   b. If the network connection has been verified to be a good connection then you will have to contact a vendor to troubleshoot the problem with your NIC.

4. Can you load the NMMI home page at: www.nmmi.edu?
   a. If you can load the NMMI home page (not a cached copy) then the problem is likely not with our network. Move onto step 5.
   b. If you cannot connect to our homepage, contact IS at x8110.

5. Can you load the NMSU home page at: www.nmsu.edu?
   a. New Mexico State University is our Internet provider. If you cannot load their home page then that is the reason you do not have an Internet connection if steps 1-4 have been followed. If this is the case rest assured that NMSU/NMMI IS will be working on the problem.
